Don’t Forget to Brush!

March 31, 2015 By Donna

dental hygiene 2Did you just discover that you’re pregnant? There’s so much to be excited about when you’re first expecting. Not only is your body going to rapidly change, but so are your health and your hormones. Since life is about to get a bit more complicated, it’s important to remember the little things, like brushing and flossing your teeth. The changing hormone levels in your body can have an effect on your oral health. It’s easy to get caught up in all the excitement of being newly pregnant, so don’t forget the little things like brushing and flossing.

Brushing and flossing your teeth are an important part of maintaining your overall health not just your oral health. While you’re busy learning about the little person growing inside you, it’s important not to neglect other aspects of your oral health. Truth be told . . . your overall health can be directly linked to your oral health. Research has shown that if a mother’s mouth is healthy, the baby’s mouth has a better chance of being healthy.

It is important to maintain regular dental checkups and dental cleanings during pregnancy.

Be sure to tell your dentist that you’re pregnant and advise them of any changes in your oral health. You will want to avoid dental x-rays while pregnant. Sometimes your gums may be a bit more sensitive during pregnancy, so don’t be alarmed. Good daily oral care is one thing you won’t want to skip even on your sleepiest pregnancy day! If you begin to experience morning sickness during your pregnancy you’ll want to keep a travel toothbrush with you at all times. Acids from vomiting are detrimental to tooth enamel and gums so be sure to brush well after experiencing morning sickness. You can find more tips on maintaining good oral health during pregnancy at the National Maternal and Child Oral Health Policy Center.
