What Are the Stages of Periodontal Disease? Baton Rouge, LA
middle aged woman has a very toothache

Periodontal disease, or gum disease, is a common condition that affects the gum tissues and bone that support the teeth. It results from a bacterial infection that, if left untreated, can cause tooth loss and other health issues. Knowing how periodontal disease progresses can help you spot it early and get the proper treatment.

The Four Stages of Gum Disease

Periodontal disease can be broken down into four main stages. The stages are as follows:

Gingivitis

Gingivitis is the first phase and mildest form of periodontal disease. It occurs when the gums become inflamed from the buildup of plaque and tartar. Symptoms include red, swollen and bleeding gums and bad breath. Most cases of gingivitis can be fixed with professional cleaning and better oral hygiene habits, like brushing and flossing more often.

Early Periodontitis

If left untreated, gingivitis can progress to early periodontitis. At this stage, the bacteria in the plaque and tartar begin to attack the bone and tissue that support the teeth. Symptoms include receding gums, increased sensitivity and possible gum recession. Early periodontitis can still be treated with scaling and root planing procedures.

Moderate Periodontitis

Moderate periodontitis is characterized by further damage to the bone and tissue that support the teeth. As a result, teeth may become loose, and there may be pockets of infection that are difficult to clean. At this point, you may need more extensive scaling, root planing and gum surgery to fix the problem.

Advanced Periodontitis

The most severe stage of periodontal disease is advanced periodontitis. It can lead to tooth loss and other health problems. At this stage, teeth may be very loose or even fall out. Therefore, dentures or implant placement may be part of a treatment plan after tooth extraction.
