Dentures can replace just a few teeth or a whole arch, depending on what you still have and what’s healthy enough to keep. If you’ve got natural teeth that are in good shape, partial dentures can fill the gaps. If you need to replace all the teeth in your upper or lower arch, full dentures may be the right choice.
At Juban Cowen Dental Care in Baton Rouge, we start with an exam to see what your mouth needs before discussing denture options.
When Do Partial Dentures Make Sense?
Partial dentures are designed for people who still have natural teeth. The American Dental Association explains that partial dentures replace missing teeth and may attach to remaining teeth with clasps or other connectors.
We check whether your remaining teeth are healthy enough to keep, how much support they’ll provide, and whether any other dental work should come first.
If a partial denture makes sense for you, it can fill in missing teeth without needing to replace the whole arch.
When Are Full Dentures the Better Option?
A full denture replaces every tooth in an upper or lower arch. The American College of Prosthodontists distinguishes complete dentures from partial dentures based on how many teeth they replace.
If several teeth aren’t healthy or an arch can’t be restored reliably, a full denture may be the better option. Sometimes extractions are part of the plan if you still have teeth, but we’ll make that call based on what we see during your exam.
What Do We Look At Before Recommending Dentures?
No two mouths are the same, so we look at:
- How many teeth are missing
- Which natural teeth can still be kept
- The health of your gums and supporting bone
- How your bite comes together
- Whether treatment or extractions are needed first
This helps us see if a partial denture, full denture, or another restorative option is the best fit for you.
What Does the Denture Process Look Like?
Juban Cowen Dental Care provides customized dentures in Baton Rouge, including full and partial dentures.
Getting dentures usually takes a few appointments. We’ll take impressions and work with a dental lab to make your denture. You’ll come back for a try-in so we can check the fit and look, and sometimes you’ll need another try-in or adjustment before your final denture is ready.
Dr. Michael Juban has continued postdoctoral training through the Dawson Center.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get dentures if I still have several natural teeth?
Yes, sometimes you can. If your remaining teeth are healthy enough, a partial denture can fill in the gaps. We’ll check those teeth before we recommend a plan.
Can I have a full denture on only the top or bottom?
Yes, you can. A full denture can replace just your upper or lower arch. You don’t have to get full dentures on both arches at once.
