What Causes Gum Disease?

Gum disease occurs when bacteria build up in the periodontal pockets between the gums and the teeth. Because at-home brushing and flossing cannot fully remove the bacteria, they continue to breed and eventually destroy healthy soft tissues, tooth enamel, tooth roots, and even jawbone.

Without intervention by trained dental providers like Drs. Juban and Cowen, patients with gum disease face considerable oral health issues. However, with routine periodontal disease treatments, they can eliminate bacteria and enjoy healthy teeth and gums.

Stages of Periodontal Disease in Adults

In general, periodontal disease occurs in three stages.

The first stage, gingivitis, is the best time to diagnose gum disease because the bacteria has not yet reached the bone. When dentists like Drs. Juban and Cowen discover signs of gingivitis, they can help the patient fully recover with in-office and at-home care.

The second and third stages of gum disease are moderate and advanced periodontitis. At this point in gum disease progression, the oral bacteria have damaged healthy soft tissues, hard tissues, and potentially bone. The more severe the periodontitis, the more important it is for periodontal intervention. Although there is no cure for periodontitis, it can be effectively managed with the help of trained dental providers.

Warning Signs of Gum Disease

The basic symptoms of early, moderate, and late stage gum disease include:

  • Bleeding gums
  • Painful, swollen gums
  • Red gums
  • Bad breath that doesn’t improve with gum, mints, brushing, or flossing
  • Pus coming from the periodontal pockets
  • Loose teeth
  • Teeth that fall out

Gum disease progresses rapidly, so any warning signs should be taken seriously and brought to a Baton Rouge dentist’s attention.
